Chinese Uyghurs need our immediate help

For over two decades, the Chinese government has engaged in brutal oppression of the Uyghur ethnic minority concentrated mainly in the Xinjiang region in Western China.

Under the iron fist of President Xi Xinping, the crackdown on Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other ethnic and religious minorities has intensified.

Reports now indicate that more than one million Uyghur Muslims are detained at ‘re-education’ camps in Xinjiang, which are run by the Chinese government.

There, Uyghurs are indoctrinated to abandon their religious beliefs and culture, and pledge their loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party. Investigative journalism reports and testimonies of survivors reveal that prisoners are subject to inhumane treatment, torture, and rape.

All the while, millions of Uyghyrs across China (as well as those living abroad) are subject to surveillance by the Chinese authorities, who are tracking their every move. In China, Uyghurs are effectively prohibited from practicing Islam, children are being separated from their parents, and disappearance of Uyghurs has become the norm.

Nations across the world have thus far remained largely silent about the brutal oppression of Uyghurs in China, and global brands - including Adidas, Nike, Apple, and Sony - are reportedly benefiting from forced Uyghur labour.

The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) is a non-profit organisation committed to raising awareness of the Uyghurs' plight and working with international players to take action against their oppression.

The WUC works closely with several UN agencies, including the Human Rights Council and several Treaty Bodies, in order to highlight and achieve common goals in an effort to promote Uyghurs’ rights and end their subjugation.

The organisation also collaborates with the European Union and several individual governments and organises demonstrations and events aimed at inspiring civil and governmental action on the issue and raising awareness.

Please visit the WUC website to learn more about its vital work and consider pledging a donation.

Also, please take the time to further research the situation in China and spread awareness about the oppression of Uyghurs on your platforms. Public pressure on governments and companies is vital, and the more knowledgeable we are on the subject the greater impact we will have.
