Join ESSAI to promote gender equality in sub-Saharan Africa

type:NGO, Volunteering
by:Yair Oded

Fighting for women’s equality and human rights across Africa is an ongoing battle. A recent marriage legislative reform in Côte d’Ivoire signals that, though difficult, this battle is securing feats across the continent.

While securing equality in marriage, land rights, and property laws is crucial, it is important to remember that any policy changes in those spheres must occur in tandem with an overall commitment to advance women’s rights on a wide spectrum of issues, including education, healthcare, and access to the economy.

Founded in 1996, The Eastern African Sub-Regional Support Initiative for the Advancement of Women (EASSI) is a sub-regional, nonprofit organisation working to empower and protect the rights of women across Eastern Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond.

Funded by the European Union, the organisation collaborates with numerous partners and volunteers to increase “the capacity of women and civil society organisations in governance, leadership, economic empowerment, policy advocacy initiatives and peace and security.”

Through outreach, networking, research, capacity building, and advocacy efforts, EASSI focuses its attention in six main areas: education and training of women, women and health, human rights of women, women and poverty,  women and the economy, and women in power and decision making.

Please visit EASSI’s website to learn about their ongoing programs as well as volunteer, internship, and partnership opportunities.
