The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the United Kingdom hard. With 191,000 confirmed cases and over 28,000 reported deaths, communities across the U.K. struggle to get by and protect their members.

Mutual Aid societies across the world have been critical in providing immediate relief to communities and connecting people with local resources.

COVID-19 Mutual Aid UK is a network of volunteers working to support local communities across the U.K. through the pandemic—providing resources, organising volunteers, and facilitating connection between people and local aid groups.

“Communities are not just defined by geography. Our experiences define who we are, and the types of support and networks we may need during times of crisis,” the group states on its website.

The organisation’s primary focus is providing assistance to people who are quarantined, with a particular emphasis on members of communities that lack access to resources or are discriminated against in some form. “We recognise that injustice doesn’t affect everyone equally and whilst we’re all at risk of Covid-19, there are some people who are more vulnerable and need greater support from the community.”

The organisation set up information about specific resources available to migrants, LGBTQ people, disabled and autistic people, and those suffering from domestic abuse.

If you are in the U.K., you may want to visit their website for information about Mutual Aid societies operating in your area, learn about volunteer opportunities or ways you can help, and access information about local resources you may use.
