Empower and support widows in Afghanistan

When an Afghan woman has lost or is not living with her husband, she loses all rights

Facing eviction or threats of their children being taken away, most Afghan widows are left under the control of their in-laws or male members of their extended family.

Additionally, women who have been separated from their husbands due to immigration systems in other countries are also rendered powerless and are incredibly vulnerable to mental illness.

Beyond the 11th is an NGO that was founded in 2003 by two American women whose husbands were killed in the terror attacks of 11 September, 2001. Their brave and incredible adoption of compassion in the face of so much hatred had led the women to relate and connect to Afghan widows, who have near to no safety net.

The mission of their organisation is to empower widows in Afghanistan, which will help set a precedent for the treatment of future generations of women and widows in the country.

Since its foundation, Beyond 11th has helped thousands of widows and children.

Not only does the organisation provide literacy and numeracy classes, but also offers job training and economic support to create a sustainable economic cycle for the most vulnerable in Afghan society.

According to Time magazine (2018) Afghanistan ranks as the worst place in the world to be a woman. Due to the recent Taliban takeover of the country, this situation is only expected to worsen.
