Ukraine Living through War

It’s been more than twelve years since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine with the annexation of Crimea as well as the seizure of territory in the Donbas by Russia-backed separatist forces. And it’s been more than four years since Russia’s full-scale invasion. While territorial gains by Russian troops within the past four years have been very limited, especially viewed in light of the massive Russian losses, the level of destruction Russia has brought upon civilian livelihoods and infrastructure is inconceivable.

Beyond military gains and strategic calculations, the reality of war unfolds in the everyday lives of Ukrainians across the country. The frontline regions are of course in the direct crosshairs of ground battles and the fight over territory, leading to concentrated destruction. Yet, the war is omnipresent in the whole of Ukraine: The Kremlin is deliberately targeting civilians and their homes, as well as vital infrastructure, such as energy supply, all over the country.

Yet, unimaginable to many not living in a war-torn country, life also continues despite the war. With this dossier on Ukraine living through war, we aim to look beyond the headlines of military operations, international support and defence industry developments. Instead, we want to give a glimpse into today’s livelihoods of some Ukrainians, examine what everyday life looks like, and show how people adapted to their Russian imposed realities.
